Are you an internationally qualified nurse dreaming of working in Australia? Great news! The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) has introduced the Streamlined Assessment Pathway — an efficient route for internationally qualified registered nurses (IQRNs) from select countries to secure nursing registration without undergoing additional exams like NCLEX or OSCE. In this blog, we break down everything you need to know.
What is the Streamlined Assessment Pathway?
The Streamlined Assessment Pathway recognizes nursing qualifications and experience from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada (British Columbia & Ontario), Singapore, and Spain. This pathway makes it easier for qualified nurses to become registered in Australia without undergoing additional testing. Instead, your existing education, work experience, and licensing exams are considered.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify under Pathway 2, you need to meet the following requirements:
- Education: B.Sc. Nursing or Post-basic B.Sc. Nursing obtained since January 1, 2017.
- Work Experience: Minimum one year (1,800 hours) of nursing practice.
- Licensing Exam: Successful completion of a recognized licensing exam (CBT & OSCE for UK/Ireland, NCLEX for USA/Canada, SNB LE for Singapore).
- Nursing Registration: Valid nursing license in one of the eligible countries since January 1, 2017.
- English Language Proficiency: Proof through IELTS, OET, or PTE with acceptable scores.
Accepted English Language Tests & Scores
- IELTS (Academic): Overall 7.0 with no band less than 6.5.
- OET: B in Listening, Reading, Speaking, and C+ in Writing.
- PTE (Academic): Overall 66 with no section below 56.
Older English test results may also be accepted if you have continuously worked or studied in an English-speaking environment within 12 months of the test.
Registration Process Overview
The registration process involves document verification, submission of your application to AHPRA, and completion of a criminal history check. Following successful verification, you will receive your registration to practice in Australia.
